In a joint venture with the Isozaki group, Arup completed the preliminary design for the new integrated complex, including the train station, in Bologna. This proposal aims to provide an integrated and efficient access point to Bologna city and to the metropolitan and regional transport system.
Engineering
Arup was responsible for all the engineering aspects including geotechnics, structural and building services. The firm's contribution also included some specialist services, such as construction planning, health and safety and study of internal and external passenger flows.
Making a connection
The new Bologna Station will reflect city life, offering opportunities for shopping, culture and open spaces, as well as being a transport hub. The new station forms a link between the city on either side of the train lines and is low-rise to fit in with the surrounding buildings.
The winning design team includes Arata Isozaki Associates, Arup and M+T & Partners and was selected by a panel of expert judges consisting of internationally famous designers.
