This eye-catching lakeside headquarters of the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in Shah Alam comprises four office blocks of various heights interconnected by ‘floating’ meeting rooms and link bridges.
Arup is the proud multidisciplinary engineer for this GBI-Platinum rated building, providing geotechnics, civil, structures and MEP.
The structure is a combination of reinforced concrete and steel. Steel structures were used for the ‘floating’ meeting rooms and link bridges between the office blocks. Twenty-four metre span steel transfer trusses supported a multi-purpose hall above a column-free auditorium.

Chic meeting rooms
To create a visual sense of floating meeting rooms, roof down-hang columns were adopted thus avoiding columns below. Building aesthetics were accentuated by a 21m long steel cantilever roof at the highest block.
Green environs
The PKNS office blocks are sheltered by an ascending green roof. The upper roof is equipped with solar panels whilst the lower roof is a green roof. The extensive roof profile boasts a 2,853m2 rooftop garden at the top of the last block. It ramps up from the lakeside then doubles back up towards the lake pedestrian walkway, thus creating a seamless experience for people strolling from the lake garden on the ground floor to the ascending green roof. Elevated viewing decks enhance the already panoramic view of Shah Alam Lake Garden and its surrounding areas.

GBI-Platinum rating
Coupled with absorption chillers, the energy generated from the solar panels is utilised to power up 10% of the building’s air conditioning load. Enhanced energy efficiency was achieved by incorporating lux and motion sensors into the lighting control system to auto detect and adjust room brightness.
Dependency on potable water is reduced through rain water harvesting for toilet flushing as well as grey water recycling for landscape irrigation purposes. We designed displacement ventilation for the auditorium and surau for better comfort and energy usage while the entire building is provided with a Building Monitoring System (BMS) for centralised M&E control.
