Mail Manager stands out at the time of writing.
Why is it significant?
We worked hard to make it easy for users to file messages while they work so that it's not a task to do later, and created a fast search tool so that they could find what they had filed quickly and easily. It has become extremely successful largely because it saves people time, frustration and sometimes their skin.
Your particular skill?
Listening. Whilst a varied background does help, which in my case covers product design and manufacture, architecture, CAD, systems management, business management and sales, to develop good software you need to be able listen.
Enthusiasm?
Technology of all kinds.
Why Arup?
When I joined Arup I was told that as long as I didn't lose money or damage the firm's reputation I could pretty much do what I wanted. Whilst this has to be taken in context, it has proved to be true and Arup still attracts talented people and gives them space to grow.
