Why is it significant?
More than 90% of the world's commerce travels by sea and the related cargoes are loaded and unloaded at ports. Sustainability is a big issue for ports all around the world as they are often the focus of attention from nearby communities because of the noise, pollution, visual impact, road traffic congestion and health and safety issues they inherently bring. The creation of the SuPort tool was so important because it helps ports take a collective view of all these issues so that a finely balanced strategy for resolution can be achieved.
