Bristol is built around the river Avon, originally a commercial port which has been regenerated as a cultural and heritage destination with considerable involvement from Arup. Bristol is a major centre in south west England with an Arup office since 1974, it is the largest centre of culture, employment and education in the region and was voted Britain’s most sustainable city 2008.
Arup is helping to provide fourteen new schools for the city, including Bristol Brunel Academy, the first school to open under the governments Building Schools for the Future programme. The buildings are designed to create calm, comfortable environments in which to learn.
Other projects around Bristol include the UK’s first eco-village community Hanham Hall which is located on the site of a former Victorian hospital, and the striking new headquarters for Aardman Animations which delivers a low energy sustainable solution.
Other Arup projects include Pero’s Bridge at St Augustine's Reach, the result of collaboration between consulting engineer and artist to produce a landmark foot crossing for Bristol’s floating harbour.
Arup has also contributed to the strategic development of the city, with Bristol International Airport in the early 2000s and the more recent refurbishment of Bristol St Phillips Marsh Depot as part of a wider project – the inception of the new First Adelante Trains for the Great Western Region.
