The Capital of Wales, established as a Roman fort in AD75, Cardiff grew to prominence in the late nineteenth century as the largest coal exporting port in the world. Today the city is notable as the seat of the Welsh Government, its barrage-retained bay, sporting venues and as a centre for arts and the media.
In Cardiff since 1970, Arup has worked across Wales to enhance the built environment and is now the most substantial and diverse consultant in the Principality.
Among Arup’s prestigious projects is the Wales Debating Chamber, lauded by HRH Queen Elizabeth who praised the “skill and imagination of those who designed and constructed this remarkable example of modern architecture”.
Arup contributed substantially to the City’s Millennium projects with key roles on the Stadium and Millennium Centre. Other sports and arts projects in the region include the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, Sofia Gardens Cricket Stadium, Cardiff’s International Swimming Pool and the City’s new Football Stadium. Arup has also significantly influenced development of commercial projects in the City, particularly around Cardiff Bay where its office is situated. It is prominent in the fields of health and education, as exemplified by its projects for Swansea University and the Design 4 Life program.
As well as its work on notable buildings, Arup has helped develop infrastructure in Wales, being responsible for delivering and planning major highways, including plans for the new M4. It has been involved in the wind farms program and has undertaken various water and waste water projects in the area, including the city’s innovative Waste Treatment Works and an automated system for the city’s sewer network that is secure and intelligent, giving advance warning of blockages.
Arup is closely linked to the Cardiff community contributing academic tuition, patronage for the arts, and assisting government with its sustainability policies and programs.
Arup’s Cardiff office is also involved in a number of international projects, and in particular aviation projects which include the design of aircraft maintenance facilities and in the master planning and design of airport support buildings.
