Hotels and leisure

We bring focus to people, place and performance in hotel developments worldwide.

For guests, a hotel offers an experience as well as a place to rest. Equally, a hotel is a workplace, and often a stimulus to local prosperity. Where hotels meet leisure, retail and luxury living, they also become social and entertainment hubs.

In all roles, a hotel is a business – one that must engage with its guests and staff, as well as its community and environment, in order to thrive. At Arup, we support hotel and leisure clients by creating distinctive, responsive developments that serve high-performing and resilient businesses.

We provide a full design service, from concept to operation. Our building designers and consultants work with developers and operators around the globe – on projects that typically equate to around 25,000 rooms at any one time, and range from an eco-lodge in South Africa to the Venetian Macau, Asia’s largest single-structure hotel plus resort.

Stronger businesses

We help strengthen performance in hotels and leisure complexes. Our solutions meet the expectations of guests – on a scale from comfort to five-star luxury and beyond – while striving to be lean, efficient and resource-light in construction and operation.

To tackle the efficiency challenges of waterwaste and energy used in hotels, we deploy comprehensive specialist skills. For Hotel Amstelkwartier, Amsterdam, which is designed to be the first LEED® platinum hotel in Europe, Arup is steering the building servicesfire engineering and sustainability concept.

When it comes to sustainability, corporate aspirations often align with the wishes of guests, staff and the community. Arup provides not only the technical skills needed to achieve sustainable building solutions, but also the insight into organisational behaviour that will ensure that staff get behind the solutions too.

A fresh identity

Arup’s building design ethos matches the aspirations of hotel and leisure developers. We want to create buildings that inspire and delight, and which are responsive to people’s needs. To help operators keep pace with guests’ evolving expectations, we can enable greater IT connectivity and systems for personalised service, or engineer a hotel’s skin to create a more naturally comfortable environment inside.

Our structural and lighting specialists instil wonder with stunning forms, façades and displays, as for Abu Dhabi’s landmark Yas Hotel. The visual impact of buildings can reinforce the imprint of a global brand, or set a boutique hotel apart. This is well appreciated by clients who come to Arup for reinvention through building retrofits, such as the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, or Hotel Concorde La Fayette, Paris.

Connected to place

Arup combines world-class expertise with a respect for context whether we’re helping to create a new waterfront development in Montenegro or Singapore’s vast Marina Bay Sands integrated resort. Our approach is sympathetic to the distinctive character of true originals, such as Claridges, London, but also to the consistent international standards of brands such as Hyatt, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott, Hilton and Sheraton.
