Data centres: sustaining delivery

The rocketing IT and communications needs of our networked world require data centres that deliver with speed, reliability and security, and which anticipate future demand.

To commercially sustainable data operations, efficiency is becoming key, as are corporate carbon reduction agendas. Arup is responding by designing facilities such as Citigroup Citi Data Centre, the world’s first LEED® platinum data centre, and by helping clients to optimise operations.

We have realised multiple projects for international data centre owners and operators such as Digital Realty Trust and colocation providers including Equinix. Our expertise extends from project management and security for Asia’s largest data centre to an energy-saving retrofit for one of Europe’s key ICT sites.

Industry: fine-tuning solutions

For international clients, such as Procter & Gamble (P&G), Toyota and Kraft (Cadbury), Arup provides a globally coherent response, but one which is attuned to the challenges of regional markets.

We can help streamline operations and lift productivity in mature markets. Or, where new markets are emerging, we can deliver major projects that meet demand and adapt to growth.

Arup provides solutions for manufacturing plants, industrial processes, distribution centres and logistics, as well as specialised services including seismic designfire engineering and sustainability consulting. Our comprehensive skills equip us to engineer a facility as well as its utilities, as we did for Asia Aluminium and P&G Milenio in Mexico, or to consult on emerging solutions such as combined heat and power networks and renewable energy.

Laboratories are becoming more flexible and digitally connected. The future of science facilities is also being shaped by the growing pressures of commercial and environmental sustainability.

Arup’s clients in science span academic, institutional and corporate sectors. We carry best practice from sector to sector to help clients create more cost-effective, sustainable and adaptable facilities.

Our experience equips us for projects such as the Francis Crick Institute, which is set to become Europe’s biggest biomedical research centre, or to create models of energy-efficient research space, as at Princeton University. Our science specialists know how to design exacting spaces – such as high-containment laboratories and major manufacturing plants such as Biogen Idec’s facility in Demark. We also draw on Arup’s wide skills, including building performance, for projects such as Pfizer’s energy efficiency improvements.
