Arup is proud to announce that the International Commerce Centre (ICC), to which it provided full engineering services, was voted as the gold winner at the MIPIM Asia Awards 2011, a scheme designed to recognise outstanding real estate projects in the Asia Pacific region.
At the gala dinner and award ceremony held on 16 November, the MIPIM Asia delegates ranked the 29 winning projects in 10 categories and gave the winners gold, silver or bronze status. The ICC claims the top accolade in the Best Business Centre Category.
ICC is the tallest building in Hong Kong and boasts stunning 360° views of Victoria Harbour. Facing the challenging ground conditions, Arup engineers conducted a series of detailed studies and comparison of various foundation types, and finally chose shaft grouted friction barrettes as the foundation system for its satisfactory load carrying capacity and settlement performance. ICC also set new benchmarks for tall building construction in Hong Kong. The main structural skeleton is formed from a high modulus concrete inner core wall. Arup engineered the design of this innovative self-compacting high modulus concrete with special volcanic tuff aggregate.
Five other projects, in which Arup had a major involvement, have also been recognised for their innovative, technical, environmental and architectural qualities.

Shanghai International Cruise Terminal was awarded silver in the Best Mixed-use Buildings Category. Arup designed the district cooling system – first time for a commercial development in Shanghai– with heat rejection and extraction into the Huangpu River.

Arup is the structural, geotechnical and façade engineer for this new landmark building featuring a fish-shaped steel monocoque canopy over the roof. The iconic shopping complex boasts a stunning façade and roof design with full height atriums.
