Doelen

  • The renovation put De Doelen back on the map as one of the most important cultural buildings in the city.
  • Lighting design reflects the dynamic and cosmopolitan image of Rotterdam.

Built in 1966, De Doelen hosts concerts ranging from jazz  to classical operas and it also offers a large congress facility. An extensive renovation was necessary to keep the key position as a quality venue in Rotterdam.

Arup designed the lighting for the main auditorium, the 'Grote Zaal', as well as the entrance foyer. The lighting design reflects the dynamic and cosmopolitan image of Rotterdam.

The lighting of the Grote Zaal was crucial in the renovation. It was designed to provide a comfortable and pleasurable experience for the public. Subtle lighting integrated along the perimeter accentuates the architecture. The special zoning of the lights and control of spill light for the seating, allows the large and overwhelming space to be made to feel intimate during a small concert.

The renovation of De Doelen has added new relevance to the Rotterdam institution, allowing it to once again be one of the most important cultural buildings in the city.
