Germany’s oldest city Cologne is world-famous for its numerous cultural and educational facilities. The University of Sports is the only higher education facility of this type in Europe. The new building will contain some of the faculties and laboratories for science and medicine as well as the doping research department. Approximately 10,000m2 of the total GFA of 14,000m2 are reserved for the state of the art research laboratories of this leading department.
Elegant design and public space
Arup’s team of façade, fire and structural engineering is developing concepts and construction solutions to realise the special geometry of the building, aiming for an elegant and user-comfort-oriented design.
The central architectural idea takes reference to the urban conditions in the vicinity and creates a weather-protected plaza serving as a public space for communication and interaction as well as the main entrance to the building.
Largest facility of its kind
This new building construction project is located next to the main university building of the Campus of Sports, which is considered the world’s largest facility of its kind.
