Arup hails Sydney Opera House World Heritage Listing

28 Jun 2007

The inclusion of Sydney Opera House on the UNESCO World Heritage List has been acclaimed by Arup, the global consulting engineering company that played an integral role in the development of the building, now one of the world’s best-known icons.

Commenting on the listing, Chief Executive Officer for Arup Australasia, Dr Robert Care said

The entire Arup group derives enormous pride from its ongoing association with a building that is still receiving such significant acclaim.

Throughout the House’s history there has been consistent acknowledgement that Jørn Utzon’s magnificent vision would not have been realised without the collaboration of the engineers, Arup and the contractor, MR Hornibrook. Our contribution is generally described as the ‘practical genius whose building solution gave life to the design’."

"In developing the breakthrough method needed to construct the sail-shaped roofs, our founder, Ove Arup enabled Utzon to achieve his vision. The project, which featured a number of world first engineering and construction techniques, took 15 years to complete. The outcome reflects the underlying philosophy of innovation, dedication and technical excellence that Arup brings to all its projects," Dr Care explained.

Dr Care continued, "Arup has been privileged not only to be there at the start but to continue to partner Sydney Opera House for the past 50 years. On this special day in the history of the Sydney Opera House, Arup is very proud to congratulate its iconic partner on this outstanding recognition."
