On 21 February 2008, The Queen attended the official opening for the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority's (LFEPA) new headquarters building in Southwark.
For Arup, the opening signifies the successful completion of a three year project to move LFEPA from previous accommodation at Albert Embankment into modern, cost effective offices that meet the needs of today’s flexible working methods.
Location was a crucial factor in selecting the new site, with key considerations being proximity to public transport and amenities for staff as well as the ability for operational officers to meet “blue light” response times. The new site - at 169 Union Street - also has the advantage of being close to City Hall and adjacent the Authority’s Southwark Training Centre.
Arup’s commission began in 2004 with a strategic review of the Brigade’s accommodation needs. The Arup Project Management team, led by Dan Cossins, progressed through site selection and brief development to the successful completion of the fit out and refurbishment contract, enabling staged occupation of the building to take place earlier this year. Overall Arup has provided project management, cost management and CDM-Coordination services.
To date approximately 750 employees have transferred to the building, with the final move of staff was completed on 11 February.
