Nokia China opens new headquarters

28 Apr 2008

The opening ceremony of Nokia China's new headquarters (also known as the Nokia Green Building) was held last week. The ceremony was attended by Tom Hicks, Vice President of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Colin Giles, President of Nokia China Investment Company Limited, officials from the Ministry of Environment and Protection and over 400 guests. Mr Hicks presented a LEED™ Gold Certificate for the building to Mr Giles making the headquarters the first LEED® Gold Certified commercial office building in China.

Located in Beijing's Yizhauang Economic and Technological Development Area, the building reaches six storeys high and covers 70,000 square meters. It houses office space for 2000 employees and a research and development centre. Each side of the building façade is surrounded by a doubled glass curtain wall with a temperature-controlled cavity in between its glass panes. This works with the building's air conditioning system to prevent the impact of outdoor temperatures being felt.

A large communal atrium connects the office and research and development wings providing natural light and ventilation along with skylights throughout the building. The building also has underground parking, an environmental friendly parking area for low carbon emitting and fuel efficient vehicles and a secure bicycle parking area.

Arup provided architectural, lighting, acoustic, façade, fire, MEP, masterplanning and structural engineering services. The project team took a holistic design approach adopting a sustainability design strategy including green building design concepts. These took into consideration the climatic conditions of the surrounding area, use of natural light and ventilation, and the use of recycled materials and energy saving techniques, in accordance with LEED® standards. This resulted in cutting the energy consumption of the building by 20% compared to other commercial buildings.
