Arup has won the Grand Award in both Hong Kong Projects category and Overseas Projects category at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers/The Institution of Structural Engineers Joint Structural Division (HKIE/IStructE JSD) Structural Excellence Awards 2009. To win in both categories is a great achievement for Arup and it is rare in the history of the prestigious scheme.
The winning Hong Kong project is One Island East, a 68-storey Grade A office building located at Quarry Bay. The judges were especially impressed by its technical excellence and environmental designs. The building is pioneering in extensive use of grade 100 high strength concrete, which not only cut construction material but also increased the usable floor area. With the reduced construction material transportation and other related activities, CO2 emission and waste generation were also significantly reduced. In addition, the use of advanced building information modelling ensured early identification and resolution of potential problems, saving construction period and cost.
The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) scoops the top accolade in the Overseas Projects category. The main venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics is widely recogonised as an engineering and architectural masterpiece. For Arup engineering designers, it is the perfect structure to stretch innovative thinking and break new ground in the application of technologies.
Facts:
- The intricately arranged steel roof structure has earned the stadium the nickname of the “Bird’s Nest”.
- The use of grade 100 concrete in One Island East reduces the CO2 emission by approximately 3,500 tons.
