Arup wins UK High Speed 2 rail options study

26 May 2009

HS2 Ltd (the company set up by the UK Secretary of State for Transport to look at a possible new railway line between London and the West Midlands) have chosen Arup to be their consultant for engineering services, to look at route options and solutions for the new line – expected to be a 350kph high speed line designed to international standards.

Arup's work will include investigating options for stations in London and Birmingham, access to Heathrow Airport and possible connections to High Speed 1. It will also include assessing broad options for extending the line to cities to the north of Birmingham. HS2 will report formally to government on the first stage, London to Birmingham, at the end of 2009.

Colin Stewart, Arup’s Global Rail Leader comments, "Arup is delighted to have been appointed by HS2 Ltd to carry out this assessment of options for extending Britain’s High Speed Rail Network.

We have championed High Speed Rail since the late 1980s, and were delighted when our alignment for High Speed 1 was selected and commissioned by the government in the early 1990s.

HS2 Ltd has been set a challenging remit by the Secretary of State for Transport, and we will work hard with HS2 to ensure the best high speed rail network is delivered for the UK."
