Partnership with John Holland focusing on the oil and gas sector

02 Jun 2009

Arup and John Holland today launched a new business partnership to focus on emerging infrastructure work in the oil and gas sector.

The partnership will bring together John Holland’s proven experience in civil, marine and specialised construction with Arup’s global strength in design and engineering.

The agreement creates an integrated service offering for the execution of civil and marine infrastructure projects in the oil and gas sector. John Holland and Arup will offer value to clients through Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) delivery solutions. This EPC partnership will utilise both companies’ proven experience in the delivery of jetties, material offloading facilities and concrete gravity structures. Extensive civil contracting expertise will enable the concurrent delivery of other important project infrastructure.

“John Holland has a long history in the oil and gas sector and strong track record in the delivery of highly technical industrial facilities,” said John Holland Group Managing Director, David Stewart. “Our recent experience in the resources sector – particularly delivering port facilities in Queensland and highly specialist electrical instrumentation work – gives us the knowledge to make an important contribution in this space.”

He continued, “John Holland has created an industry-leading reputation as an alliance and joint venture partner of choice. We welcome this partnership with Arup and look forward to working closely with them to bring this service offering to the market.”

CEO and Chairman of Arup Australasia, Dr Robert Care described the new partnership as a wonderful opportunity for the two companies to combine skills and experience in the oil and gas sector.

“This relationship will deliver much more than the sum of its parts. Together Arup and John Holland can offer unequalled quality and service to the oil and gas sector.

“The award willing Malampaya Concrete Gravity Substructure, completed for Shell Philippines in 2000, is an example of the how the relationship between Arup and John Holland can create outstanding projects,” said Dr Care.

Since then Arup has delivered substructure design for the Maari DrillACE Platform for OMV and the Yolla DrillACE Platform for Origin. Arup has continued to deliver engineering excellence and innovation in offshore structures and nearshore marine facilities.

John Holland’s current work in the Queensland resources sector includes the AU$350m Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Marine Jetty and Berth 4 Expansion and the $280m Abbot Point Coal Terminal X50 Marine Berth Expansion and Jetty Conveyors on behalf of the Ports Corporation of Queensland. John Holland is also working in Western Australia for BHP Billiton on Iron Ore facilities and Alumina Refineries and with Woodside on the Pluto LNG project.

Brendan Petersen, General Manager of John Holland’s specialist SMP business and Chris Evans, General Manager of John Holland’s Northern Region construction business were today joined by Robert Care, CEO and Chairman of Arup Australasia, in Brisbane to formalise the new agreement. An Executive Committee has been established comprising representatives from each company to develop strategy and identify long-term opportunities in the market.
