Arup wins competition with design of Finland's first carbon neutral district

02 Sep 2009

Arup and a team of partners from Sauerbruch Hutton, Experientia and Galley Eco Capital have been announced as winners of a competition with a design for Finland’s first carbon neutral district - Jätkäsaari, Helsinki (known as the Low2No Block).

The competition was run by Finnish innovation fund, Sitra; it received more than 70 entries, whittled down to a final shortlist of five.

It was set up aiming to encourage city decision-makers, developers, planners and constructors to consider the inevitable effect of climate change.

The City of Helsinki has been praised for its pioneering spirit and open-minded attitude by joining Sitra in this competition.

The Arup proposal, called ‘c_life – City as living factory of ecology’ made recommendations for the Low2No Block, as well as Helsinki and Finland as a whole. It was chosen as the winner for its focus on empowering people living in the district of Jätkäsaari to live more sustainably. Judges also praised the innovative funding model for developing the district.

Sitra’s Energy Programme will work with Arup project director, Alejandro Gutierrez to realise the plans.
