Arup’s Jennie Gates scooped the Young Geotechnical Engineer of the Year Award at the 2010 Ground Engineering Awards, for her work on the London 2012 Olympics. Two Arup projects were also successful, including London high rise development The Pinnacle, which won first place in the projects over £1M category; and the First Street remediation project in Manchester, which was highly commended in both the projects over £1M and sustainability categories.
63-storey London landmark, the Pinnacle, will join an emerging cluster of high rise buildings sprouting in the eastern districts of the city. Arup designed the building structure and foundations. Base grouted bore poles of up to 2.4m in diameter will carry the huge column loads down to bear in the 'Thanet Sand' stratum, 60m below street level.
Arup also provided transportation planning, wind and fire engineering and specialist acoustics advice for the tower. Once complete, the Pinnacle's primary occupancy will be speculative office space, with a restaurant on the top 3 floors providing spectacular views of the city.
Manchester’s First Street remediation project involves the major mixed-use redevelopment of a large former gasworks located in the city centre. Nearly 100 years of gas manufacture at the site have produced a legacy of ground and groundwater contamination that presented a significant impediment to site redevelopment. Arup is responsible for the design of the remediation strategy and tender and site supervision for the on-site remediation works.
The awards, hosted by stand up comedian, Alun Cochrane, were presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel and attended by over 200 representatives from the geotechnical consultancy and contracting industries.
