Sports Venue Design Competition winner

29 Apr 2010

In partnership with SportsAid, the Construction Youth Trust and the Royal Academy of Engineering, Arup invited students aged 12-14 from across London to design and submit plans for a new sports venue.

The winning entry was submitted by Jonathan Hoey from Heathcote School and Science College in Waltham Forest, who battled through three stages to win the competition. A runners-up plate was also awarded to Mill Hill County High School.

Thirty entries from 11 participating schools across London were submitted and 15 were shortlisted, with 10 finalists competing for the prestigious accolade.

All contestants were judged on a range of criteria, including aesthetics, sustainability, structure and legacy to the local community. The winning design demonstrated a thorough understanding of the criteria and end user needs.

The finals took place on 29 April at Arup’s London office. Prizes include a 3D scale model of the winning team’s venue design made by Arup consultants, a visit to their school by an Olympian and an exclusive visit to the Olympic Park. Finally, the Ove Arup Foundation is contributing £1,000 of prize money to the winning school.

The judging panel included Bill Grose, Arup; Jerome Frost, Olympic Delivery Authority; Sara Klomps, Zaha Hadid Architects; Jamie Blundell, SportsAid Arup Award athlete and Sarah Winckless, the two-time world champion rower on behalf of SportsAid.

Bill Grose of Arup said: “Through this competition we have unearthed some truly creative and talented young design engineers. The winner, Jonathan Hoey at Heathcote School and Science College, demonstrated a remarkable understanding and grasp of sports venue design and should be extremely proud of his achievements, in what was a very well fought and competitive contest. Arup is delighted to have conceived this project and will continue to support schools and raise awareness and enthusiasm within the engineering, design and construction industry.”
