Triple Success at Structural Excellence Award 2010

25 May 2010

Stonecutters Bridge, The Masterpiece and Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3, all engineering designed by Arup, have received top awards in the Structural Excellence Award 2010.

Organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers/The Institution of Structural Engineers Joint Structural Division (HKIE/IStructE JSD), the prestigious award scheme was designed to promote excellence in structural engineering and achievement by structural engineers in Hong Kong.

Stonecutters Bridge  received the Grand Award in the Hong Kong Projects Infrastructure Category. The bridge is a prestigious landmark addition to Hong Kong. Spanning across the busy Rambler Channel, it forms the centrepiece of the Cheung Sha Wan and Tsing Yi section of Route 8. With a main span of 1,018m, it is the second-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.

The Masterpiece, a 280m tall, high-end mixed-use development, scooped the top accolade in the Hong Kong Projects Composite and Commercial Buildings Category. With an aspect ratio (height/breadth) of 12, it is currently the most slender building in Hong Kong that does not employ a damping system. The tower is also the first in Hong Kong to use a pre-cast façade. This reduced construction waste as site falsework and formwork, and in-situ concreting was minimised.

Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3  has been awarded the Merit Commendation in the Mainland/Overseas Projects Category. The largest single terminal building in the world at 986,000m2, Terminal 3 is designed to be one of the most passenger-friendly super-hub facilities in the world with minimal changes of level, short distances between destinations and quick transfer times.
