Arup engineer Ziggy Lubkowski has been awarded the 2009 Shamsher Prakash prize for Excellence in Practice in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering.
The award was presented by Professor Liam Finn at the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering & Soil Dynamics in San Diego. He was nominated for the award by Dr Jack Pappin, Dr Brian Simpson and Tim Chapman (Arup), Prof. Julian Bommer (Imperial College London) and Edmund Booth (consulting engineer).
"I must thank Arup and in particular Dr Jack Pappin for the opportunity given to me in working on such a wide range of interesting projects around the world. I have been truly privileged."
– Ziggy Lubkowski on receiving the award.
Ziggy joined Arup in 1990, and is the firm’s seismic business and skills leader in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was awarded the prize in recognition of his work in the field over the last 20 years, which has included several seismic research and development projects and the publication of numerous papers relating to this work.
He has also participated in post-earthquake field missions and has recently returned from Chile where he led the British Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team’s (EEFIT) response to the 27 February earthquake.
He contributed to the development of a field guide for the survey of earthquake damaged non-engineered structures and is currently the panel Chair for the EPICentre group at University College London, which aims to provide guidance in order to reduce future earthquake and tsunami losses.
Ziggy has recently contributed to the preparation of a book and manual on seismic design to Eurocode 8 for the Society of Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (ECED) and the Institution of Structural Engineering respectively. He has been invited to give lectures on earthquake related subjects including Eurocode 8, dynamic soil structure interaction, seismic design of tall buildings, seismic risk assessment, disaster risk reduction and the effects of tsunami.
The prize is open to practicing engineers from all over the world who are specialists in Geotechnical Engineering and/or Earthquake Engineering who have demonstrated significant individual contributions to the specialism and who show promise of excellence.
