Arup on Solar Decathlon judging panel

21 Jun 2010

This year the ´Solar Decathlon’ efficient housing competition will be held in Madrid from 17 - 27 June 2010.

This is the first time the prestigious, international competition will take place out of the USA. Three Arup representatives will be part of a notable jury of specialists.

Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 is a competition in which students from universities around the world design and construct real, sustainable and eco-efficient model-houses. The final award is given to the most sustainable and energy efficient house.

Historically, the competition – which started in 2002 - was organised by the U.S. Department of Energy, but this year it is being joint-organized by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the City council of Madrid and the Ministry of Housing. This year, 17 models will be examined by the international judging panel.

Specialist judges on the panel from Arup are:

  • Fiona Cousins – based in Arup’s New York office, will participate as a sustainability judge
  • Chris Twinn – based in Arup’s London office, joins the engineering panel
  • Ignacio Fernandez – based in Arup’s Madrid office will participate as one of the appeal judges.
  • Ramon Rodriguez - based in Arup's Madrid office will participate as the coordinator of the engineering panel

During the ten days of the competition, Susana Saiz and Matias Garcia - specialist architects from Arup Spain - will participate as speakers in several round tables.
