Northbridge Piazza wins Landscape Architecture Award

09 Jul 2010

At an awards ceremony held in Perth on 14 May, the Northbridge Piazza won the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) WA chapter ‘Design in Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence’.

Arup provided civil and structural engineering for the landscape works.

The City of Perth regeneration project comprises Perth's first permanent outdoor LED screen, an adjoining community building, a green wall, a raised platform, 1,800m2 of open space and informal seating, and Australia's first free fourth-generation Wi-Fi to be made available in a public park. The community space was designed to facilitate events and the public screening of sport, films, festivals and other cultural activity.

Situated on the corner of Lake and James Streets in the heart of Northbridge the Piazza was officially opened in late October 2009, reinforcing Perth’s rejuvenated Northbridge district as a premier cultural and entertainment destination.

In a City of Perth press release Chief Executive Officer Frank Edwards commented on the value of the award in recognising the significant role urban design projects have played in evolving Perth into a people friendly city capable of supporting economic and cultural growth.

Since completion the Piazza has hosted an array of events and activities, most recently including screenings of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
