Roger Milburn, Arup’s global civil engineering practice leader, presented to the Urban Design Futures symposium at the Shanghai World Expo on 4 August.
Hosted by the University of Liverpool in the city’s pavilion in Shanghai, the event invited city leaders, developers, architects, academics and engineers to explore the challenges and solutions facing urban design.
In line with the Expo’s theme of 'better city better life', Roger Milburn presented on the role that our cities' physical assets need to play in combating urbanisation and climate change.
As well as strategic responses, the presentation highlighted the role of tools in addressing these challenges, including Arup’s Existing Buildings Survival Strategies, 3D CityModelling and the SURF/Arup Action Framework.
The presentation forms part of Arup’s broad involvement at the Expo. In addition to supporting the Liverpool Pavilion in the Urban Best Practice Area, the firm has also played an important role in preparing Shanghai to host the World Expo, working on the masterplanning of the site.
The firm has helped to deliver some notable pavilions in Shanghai, including the Denmark Pavilion, Korea Pavilion and Singapore Pavilion.
