On Thursday 28th October, Baroness Ford, Chair of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, hosted an event on behalf of Arup’s ConnectWomen network at the House of Lords, London, UK.
On the topic of Gender and Urban Design, the event attracted nearly 100 guests and provoked lively debate around the issue of women in design. Arup’s Suzanna Pembroke presented research on Inclusive Masterplanning looking at how the design of towns and cities must meet the needs of the communities that live in them and how we can start to understand what women want and need from the urban landscape.
Keynote speaker Lynne Featherstone MP, UK Minister for Equalities, followed with a talk on the under-representation of women in the design professions. The Minister encouraged a vigorous discussion on how the industry can begin to address the issue and encourage more women into science, engineering and technology careers.
"Your ConnectWomen network is a terrific initiative, [this is] just the kind of quality event I would expect of Arup."
– Judy Lowe, CITB Construction Skills
