Four of Arup’s projects were honoured at the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards, held in London on 11 November.
Best Hospital Design
Winner – CircleBath Hospital. Arup provided mechanical, electrical and public health engineering services, fire and acoustic specialist advice. Designed by Foster + Partners, the private facility contains four operating theatres, a state of the art imaging department, physiotherapy, consulting and 28 single patient bedrooms.
Best Social Care Design
Winner – Rose Lodge Learning Disabilities Assessment and Treatment Centre. Arup provided structural and civil engineering design, including below-building and below-ground drainage, and a geotechnical investigation. The £6.1m purpose-built centre, developed by MAAP Architects and Laing O’Rourke, is designed around a landscaped courtyard and accommodates 12 in-patient beds and a number of day activity and staff facilities.
Best Hospital Design and Best Interior Design
Highly commended – The London Clinic Cancer Centre. Arup provided fire engineering consultancy. The new eight-storey, 7,500m2 cancer treatment facility in central London was designed by Anshen + Allen, and with 47 individual bedrooms and 22 day care pods, is the largest new build in the private healthcare sector in the past 25 years.
Best Landscape or External Space
Winner – Redcar Primary Care Hospital. Supporting Sir Robert McAlpine, Arup provided structural, civil and building engineering services. The external spaces of this 10,000m2 integrated healthcare centre comprise a collection of external and ‘internal’ spaces, linking as a series of corridors to the central hub of the building and helping to bring the outside in. The landscaping also includes a series of roof gardens at first-floor level.
Arup has completed over 2,500 healthcare projects in over 40 years working in the sector.
