Arup was recognised for its outstanding work on five projects at the 2010 at the Consult Australia Awards held in Melbourne on Friday 3 December.
For the third time in four years Arup claimed Consult Australia's top prize, with Kurilpa Bridge winning 2010 Project of the Year. The judges described the project as “innovative and spectacular design very well applied... (it) combines economy with practicality and excellent buildability”.
Kurilpa Bridge also won the gold award of merit in the Transport and Civil category, adding to its growing list of accolades, including last month’s Australian Engineering Excellence Award. Arup played a vital role in the 425m long, $63m bridge and was responsible for all engineering including structural, civil, traffic, geotechnics, electrical, lighting and hydraulics.
With its sculpted steel masts towering over the Brisbane River, Kurilpa Bridge now carries 30,000 pedestrians and cyclists each week from the city centre to Brisbane’s arts, cultural and leisure precinct. Sustainable in design, solar power charges its lighting scheme and also feeds power back into the grid.
Industry acclaim
“It is a great thrill that Kurilpa Bridge continues to earn industry recognition” says Arup Project Director, Ian Ainsworth. “We had to push the boundaries of innovation to overcome the many technical challenges that the project presented.”
“We are delighted to have been part of a truly collaborative process that not only created a sustainable transport link that is effectively reducing inner city congestion and carbon emissions by encouraging walking and cycling, but also produced a striking design that is attracting considerable national and international attention” Ian concludes.
