Crossrail awards tunnel contracts

10 Dec 2010

Crossrail Ltd announces its intention to award the main contracts for the largest UK tunnelling works in over a decade.

The winning joint ventures will deliver the Arup Atkins designed twin-bore tunnels that will run from Royal Oak to Pudding Mill Lane and Royal Victoria Dock.

Arup Project Director Peter Chamley, said: “The announcement of these contracts signifies the culmination of months of innovation and hard work by the design team on this once-in-a-lifetime project. The biggest challenge has been to design an efficient route and tunnelling methods that minimise disturbance to London’s existing maze of buried utilities, tunnels and overground structures. The resulting design not only meets this challenge but should result in a cost effective, safety conscious build.”

Atkins’ Project Director Rob McCrae said: “Our involvement in the Crossrail project means we are helping to create an integral new piece of London’s infrastructure – one that will bear testament to the invention and technical skill of today’s engineers and designers. It is a real achievement that contractors will now be constructing the UK’s biggest ever tunnelling project to our design.”

The two main tunnels contracts announced by Crossrail were:

  • C300 – Western Running Tunnels (Royal Oak to Farringdon)
Joint venture comprising: BAM Nuttall Ltd, Ferrovial Agroman (UK) Ltd, Kier Construction Ltd
  • C305 – Eastern Running Tunnels (Limmo Peninsula to Farringdon; Limmo Peninsula to Victoria Dock; Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane)
Joint venture comprising: Dragados S.A., John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd
