Arup’s rising stars shine at the HKIE awards night

16 Mar 2011

Three young engineers from Arup’s Hong Kong office were recognised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) at its 36th annual dinner held on 15 March.

Young Engineer of the Year Award 2011

Harry Lee is the winner of the Young Engineer of the Year Award this year, a prestigious honour recognising outstanding young engineers who have made commendable achievements and valuable contributions to the development of Hong Kong.

Harry is a chemical engineer specialising in membrane technologies for desalination and reclaimed water applications. He has taken major roles in pilot desalination and reclaimed water demonstration projects, which are key water supply initiatives under the Total Water Management programme for Hong Kong’s strategic water management. He is currently working on the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A upgrading works – the largest sewerage infrastructure in Hong Kong. With his expertise in membrane technologies, Harry aspires to help build water resilience in Hong Kong and beyond.

Innovation Awards for Young Members 2011

Two Arupians were recognised by the Innovation Awards for Young Members, a scheme designed to encourage young engineers to develop their creativity through innovative application of engineering knowledge.

Argoon Chuang was awarded the Grand Prize under Category I: An Invention. Argoon developed a tool, integrating Geographic Information System technology to facilitate quick and precise blasting assessments in highly urbanised areas. The tool streamlines the whole analysis process, knocking months off the time taken for a project to get the government’s green light – resulting in considerable savings for the firm and our clients. The integrated approach also minimises errors and ensures a greater degree of safety for the public during construction.

Stuart Millis received the Certificate of Merit under Category II: An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories. Stuart’s study involved the development and application of real-time remote monitoring systems to record ground movements and groundwater conditions within natural terrain hillside areas. The system provided fully internet accessible real-time monitoring data, and included trials of a number of innovative instruments not previously used for landside monitoring in Hong Kong.

A nurturing culture

These achievements not only mark a milestone in the individual’s engineering profession but also serve as a reward for the firm’s nurturing culture. Arup is committed to giving all the support and freedom for our young people to grow. We put together comprehensive learning and development opportunities such as Arup University and design schools to ensure that our people, at whatever stage of their career, can continue to grow with Arup. This in turn puts the firm at the leading-edge of the industry.
