Moses Mabhida Commuter Station wins at KZ-NIA awards

30 Jul 2011

The Moses Mabhida Commuter Station has won a KZ-NIA award for architecture in the KwaZulu-Natal Institute for Architects Awards for Architecture 2011 to be presented on World Architecture Day, Monday 3 October 2011.

The jurors looked for merit using ancient Roman architect Vitruvius’s triad of ideals: firmness (durability, today it would connote sustainability), commodity (functional and well-planned) and delight (which includes proportion and scale), three essential ingredients that have served modern architecture to date.

The competition consisted of 42 entries, of which 40 were buildings and two were works of research. The judging panel noted that the high standard of all submissions was a good reflection on the state of architecture in the region.

Head of Southern Africa Interchange Design, Caroline Sohie, noted that the award highlights Arup’s involvements in legacy design work, particularly around the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.
