Arup Principal and Australasian Buildings Practice Leader, Peter Bowtell, is the recipient of the Engineers Australia Professional Engineer of the Year 2011 Award.
Announced at the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony at Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Thursday 22 September, the Award recognises outstanding achievement and eminence in the practice of engineering, and service to the profession.
Peter has been recognised for his instrumental role in the construction of many high profile buildings which have shaped Melbourne, as well as his international and community work, leadership and contribution to the engineering industry for over 30 years.
His project director roles have included the iconic and multi-award winning AAMI Park Stadium, and city landmarks including the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, MCG Northern Stand and Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The award also recognises Peter’s substantial portfolio of international structures work including Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort in Singapore and the new Singapore Sports Hub, both which have pushed the boundaries of innovation and design.
Peter was also recognised for his community service to the industry and society. Peter drives Arup Australasia’s work with communities and causes as leader of Arup’s Community Partnering Program and Poverty Action Network. In addition to guiding staff participation in a number of community programs, Peter led a joint team providing engineering support to the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires recovery effort to deliver a new public hall for the community of Narbethong.
Peter now proceeds on to the National Award Presentation to be held in Canberra on 23 November 2011.
