The Main Press Center has been awarded LEED Silver precertification.

The Main Press Center (MPC) of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has received LEED Silver precertification, becoming the first building of the event to obtain such rating. Arup was responsible for providing the sustainable design and construction consultancy that enabled the building to be awarded the sustainability precertification, granted by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

LEED is an internationally recognised benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. It acknowledged that the MPC has stated environmentally sustainable goals and intentions and achieved points in all categories of the LEED- CS (Core & Shell) rating tool, including sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in the project process.

"The achievement of LEED Silver precertification is an important milestone for the 2016 Olympics and is the result of rigorous planning in the design process. This achievement recognises the commitment of the project team to ensure measurable environmental benefits in its operations."Marcelo Nudel, senior consultant at Arup

During the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the MPC will house the international press and media operations. As part of the sustainable legacy of the games, it will serve later as a high-quality office building for the local market, being a reference to other buildings that wish to meet international standards of sustainability.

The final LEED Silver certification should be granted at the end of construction. Arup is also providing consultancy for sustainable building design for other Olympic venues, such as the International Broadcast Center (IBC), the Velodrome, and the Halls of the Olympic Training Center.
