Newport Beach Civic Center and Park has earned a National Award at the 2014 Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel awards program (IDEAS2), which recognises innovations in structural steel design.

According to the awarding body, the American Institute of Steel Construction, these awards are “the highest honor bestowed on building projects by the structural steel industry in the U.S. and recognizes the importance of teamwork, coordination and collaboration in fostering successful construction projects.”

Newport Beach Civic Center and Park was awarded the National Award in the projects greater than $75M category. In order to be chosen for an award, a significant portion of a building’s framing system must be wide-flange or hollow structural steel sections. Arup selected appropriate lateral and gravity steel systems for each building in the project and the design minimizes steel usage while making the ambitious architectural details and MEP sustainability schemes possible.

AISC’s judging panel stated that they were “…very impressed with the beautiful integration of the architectural design with the structural steel, sustainability, energy, and overall project excellence” and that the project is “…a wonderful demonstration of the various uses of structural steel. The focus on creating spaces that take advantage of natural light and ventilation could only be achieved through the use of steel.”

The IDEAS2 winners were chosen from nearly 100 submissions received from architectural, engineering, and construction firms throughout the US. Winning projects will be featured in the May issue of Modern Steel Construction magazine.

Additionally, Newport Beach Civic Center and Park was recently granted LEED Gold status for meeting the USGBC’s sustainability standards.
