The annual Amsterdam Light Festival opened this week to the public, featuring an illuminated floating paper boat as one of the key pieces.

Sized 15x5m tall, the art piece called 'Intrepid' is one of the biggest pieces shown at the 3rd edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival. It has been designed by Katja Galyuk, with Arup helping to define the structure using a parametric 3D-model.

The boat is located on the water between the Public Libary and the National Maritime Museum. It refers to the illustrious history of the Dutch East Indies in Amsterdam and the wooden trading ships that once docked there.

Shaped as folded origami boat, 60 times the size of a paper version, Intrepid also reminds us of a childhood icon.

The festival was opened on 27 November by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, and will run until 18 January 2015.
