A new £25m state-of-the-art mental health hospital, Clock View, has opened in Liverpool, UK.

Arup has been working on the hospital since 2005, which will provide care for people with mental health issues including dementia, anxiety and depression.

The purpose built centre has 80 single rooms with en-suite bathrooms and has been designed to maximise natural light, with safe inner garden courtyards, activity and therapeutic areas.

Arup’s behavioural specialists and clinical psychologists worked closely with Mersey Care NHS Trust to create a hospital environment that could improve patients’ wellbeing and staff job satisfaction. The result is a holistic, modern, healing environment that will revolutionise mental health care.

Arup was also appointed to provide full design services on Clock View including BREEAM, fire, acoustics and environmental consultancy services, as well as geotechnics and transport planning.

Collaboration was the key to success on this project. We worked closely with The Mersey Care NHS Trust and Medical Architecture to ensure that close attention was paid to the details throughout project. And we also engaged with staff and patients to create safe and calm environment that promotes wellbeing.

Right from the beginning, we saw that Clock View was much more than just a building project and the result is a state-of-the-art hospital that marks a step change in the delivery of mental health care in the UK. — Garry Banks, Project Director, Arup

Clock View will become fully operational by March and The Trust has ambitions to build a series of new hospitals in Merseyside.
