North London Waste Authority’s (NLWA) Development Consent Order application for a new Energy Recovery Facility and associated development at the Edmonton EcoPark has been accepted by the Planning Inspectorate for examination.
Scheduled to replace the existing plant by 2025, the project will consist of three core elements. These include an Energy Recovery Facility complete with a Resource Recovery Facility and a Reuse and Recycling Centre, an EcoPark House which will be the new base for the Edmonton Sea Cadets, and an education and visitors’ centre.
This project delivers facilities to manage residual waste from the seven north London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.
Arup has co-ordinated the preparation of the application and provided a variety of services on the project, including planning, environmental, landscaping, transport and sustainability.
The design and site masterplan ensure the existing plant at the Edmonton EcoPark can operate up until the replacement facility is operational, at which point it will be demolished, provides space for a visitors' and education centre and is sensitive to the site’s setting, which is adjacent to the Lee Valley Regional Park.
Once complete, the replacement facility will generate up to 70 Megawatts of electricity, enough power for around 127,000 homes, up from the current capacity of 72,000 homes. The new facility will also be CHP enabled making it capable of providing low cost heat to homes in north London.
