The 89 strong Royal National Scottish Orchestra (RSNO) now has now moved into a new dynamic space designed to support their vibrant rehearsal, education and performance programme.

Arup worked hand-in-hand with Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council on this collaborative project that now accommodates a wider range of music genres and performances for the Scottish community.

Located in the heart of Glasgow’s city centre and adjacent to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, this innovative building provides a cost-effective ‘two-venues-in-one’ solution that can support rehearsals and performances of both the RSNO and Glasgow Life.

This flexible space can change from a rehearsal or recording studio, to performance venue in an impressive 30 minutes. In rehearsal mode, automated side balconies can fold up flat against the walls to provide maximum floor space, which can then be redeployed, narrowing the room, to create a more intimate and acoustical pleased performance area.

The new home is truly a world class facility for Scotland's National Orchestra, to efficiently and effectively build its reputation and increase its capacity to connect with communities across Scotland and the entire music loving world. Dr Krishna Thiagarajan, Chief Executive, RSNO

The acoustics have been carefully constructed to be adjustable to suit any type of performance, rehearsal or recording, providing perfect listening for musicians and audiences alike. Arup provided a series of services including venue and acoustic design, civil and structural engineering and fire consulting.

There are fundamental differences in the acoustic requirements between orchestral rehearsal, recital and amplified performance spaces. I am very pleased that with some innovative design thinking Arup has delighted the RSNO, other musicians and audiences in their use of this attractive, naturally lit space of both rehearsal and for a wide range of performances. Philip Wright, Project Director, Arup
