Arup continues heat networks success in the UK

UK Press Team
14 January 2016

Arup has been appointed to a number of heat networks commissions in the North of England as cities continue to find low to zero carbon sources of energy in local areas.

The commissions will see Arup undertake heat mapping and master planning in order to identify and outline opportunities for heat networks in both Greater Manchester (GM) and the Leeds City Region.

As part of the GM Heat Network Programme, Arup will help Greater Manchester begin to deliver its ambitious carbon reduction target of 48% by 2020 through the delivery of a number of priority energy projects. This will include developing decentralised energy schemes and progressing options to business case level in Manchester, Salford, Bury and Tameside.

We have enjoyed and continue to enjoy a close working relationship with colleagues at Arup as we develop these strategically important heat network projects in Greater Manchester. ” Julian Packer Low Carbon Investment Director, Greater Manchester Combined Authority

Amongst these projects is ‘Corridor Manchester’ which has identified an opportunity to establish a significant heat network, this opportunity is now going to advanced business case stage. The council is also involved in other ways of saving energy by unlocking the potential of the ‘Internet of Things’ through the implementation of the pioneering projects DIMMER and Triangulum, both of which Arup is a key collaborator.

These commissions will see our energy consulting team develop projects from concept to commercialisation so Greater Manchester is seen as a robust and credible place to invest in low carbon infrastructure.

We are delighted to be part of the next generation of heat network development across the UK. Our teams have been at the forefront of the field for years and we look forward to working with Greater Manchester and other City Regions within the Northern Powerhouse to roll out low and zero carbon heat network programmes to help shape a better future. ” Mark Anderson Mark Anderson Distributed Energy Leader

These appointments follow on from Arup’s work on the Decentralised Energy Project Delivery Unit, which resulted in investments close to £100m.
