Bologna Railway Station

  • Winner of an international competition to create an integrated design for an area in Bologna, including a new train station.
  • The station area allows efficient access to the city and various transport systems.
  • Arup was responsible for geotechnics, structural, electrical and fire engineering as well as acoustic consulting.

In a joint venture with the Isozaki group, Arup completed the preliminary design for the new integrated complex, including the train station, in Bologna. This proposal aims to provide an integrated and efficient access point to Bologna city and to the metropolitan and regional transport system.

Engineering

Arup was responsible for all the engineering aspects including geotechnicsstructural and building services. The firm's contribution also included some specialist services, such as construction planning, health and safety and study of internal and external passenger flows.

Making a connection

The new Bologna Station will reflect city life, offering opportunities for shopping, culture and open spaces, as well as being a transport hub. The new station forms a link between the city on either side of the train lines and is low-rise to fit in with the surrounding buildings.

The winning design team includes Arata Isozaki Associates, Arup and M+T & Partners and was selected by a panel of expert judges consisting of internationally famous designers.
