Getting the best returns
The pre-feasibility stage assessment tool is designed to help local authorities and other stakeholders spot the areas that will enjoy the best returns from the installation or extension of a district heating system.
By taking out some of the uncertainty, DENet is likely to help more people enjoy the advantages of sustainable energy supplies, lowering fuel bills and emissions.
District heating systems operating in places such as Copenhagen in Denmark and Southampton in the UK provide excellent examples of how effective this approach can be. However, the costs and complexity of a full feasibility study can be off-putting, and some opportunities never get off the ground.
DENet helps identify the areas that will deliver positive paybacks, allowing more people to see the great potential such systems have to offer.
The benefits
Local authorities can take direct control of the assessment process, building internal capacity and saving money by avoiding expensive technical studies on marginal or poor opportunities.
Local residents and businesses enjoy long-term reductions in their energy costs and improved energy security and the new networks will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and help to reduce the risk of climate change.
