Greenhouse by Joost, Sydney

  • Unique project rapidly planned and constructed in under eight weeks.
  • First use of Magnesium oxide boards in Australia.

The temporary restaurant ‘Greenhouse by Joost, Sydney’ in Campbell’s Cove was the pilot project as part of a world tour promoting a ‘back to basics’ philosophy on sustainability and life cycle considerations for buildings, business and lifestyle.

Planned and constructed in a short time frame, the restaurant was an exemplary model of self sufficiency; from its roof garden filtration system, and straw insulation; to the conversion of cooking oil into bio-diesel for power supply.

The main structure was constructed from standard shipping steel containers, rubber flooring made from recycled conveyor belts, and compressed hay bales as insulation materials. The plywood walls and ceilings were lined with a fire-resistant Magnesium oxide board which has not previously been used in Australia and has a much reduced carbon footprint than similar materials.

The client, Joost Bakker, commended our work on the project, stating “Arup has helped me to realise my creative vision. Where others have said things could not be done, Arup has found solutions, making it so rewarding to collaborate with a global company of such broad expertise.”

Arup provided project management, fire engineering and environmentally sustainable design services for the project and was a vital part of the core design and delivery collective providing support to Joost as the ‘Creative Director’.

Greenhouse by Joost, Sydney actively engaged the public, gained major media attention and re-invigorated Sydney’s Campbell Cove district with a new sense of excitement for the short period that it was present.

The project team have been recognised by the Australian Institute of Project Management, winning both the Australian National and NSW Project Management Achievement Awards for Best Small Project in 2011.
