Grootegeluk Medupi coal mine expansion

  • Expanding Exxaro’s Grootegeluk Mine to produce 14.6m tons per annum of power station grade coal

Arup was commissioned by Exxaro Resources for civil and structural design of the mine expansion to produce 14.6m tons per annum of power station grade coal for the new dry-cooled power station in the Limpopo province.

The project entails a brownfield expansion of Exxaro’s Grootegeluk Mine. Coal will be mined from the existing opencast pit at an accelerated rate, with the mine’s present production increasing from its current 59m tons a year to 110m tons a year.

The supply to the Medupi Power Station is planned to start in the second quarter of 2012, with a ramp-up to full production by 2014.

Arup was awarded the detailed design, infrastructure, civil and structural works working with both Engineering & Projects Company and LSL Consulting. Arup’s appointment follows the completion of a similar expansion of the Grootegeluk Mine in the late 1980s by the same three consulting companies.
