HABOM: Aircraft Heavy Maintenance Facility

  • Developing a design for a new 220,000m² facility in Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.
  • Flexibility for expansion on a 20ha site, reducing the land take from 50ha. 
  • Includes two heavy duty wide body hangars, one wide body paint hangar and three narrow body multi hangars for nine aircraft.

Turkish Airlines (THY) required the construction of an Aircraft Heavy Maintenance Facility for its developing and growing fleet to serve the national and regional civil aviation sector in Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SGIA), Istanbul.

Arup was the principal consultant responsible for facility planning, scheme design and preliminary design of this new 220,000m² maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at SGIA.

A challenging design

The development was designed to provide state-of-the-art maintenance and the challenge was to incorporate all the facilities in a relatively small site with a change in level of 20m. The construction necessitated an integrated system of communication streets with vertical connectivity for the efficient movement of staff and materials.

The project includes a nine bay narrow bodied aircraft hangar, a twin bay wide body aircraft hangar, a wide body paint hangar, 120,000m² annex workshops, 36,000m² engine centre and test cell, engine test pen, 500 space multi-storey car park, welfare facility, security installations, bus terminal and a 5000m² headquarters building.

Arup performed design management, facility planning and multi-disciplinary engineering design including fire engineering, acoustics, maintenance structures, architecture and cost management to establish the facility master plan for this new aircraft maintenance facility.
