Hunter Valley Corridor operational modelling

The Hunter Valley coal network consists of a dedicated double track Coal Line between Port Waratah and Maitland (New South Wales, Australia), a shared double-track line from Maitland to Muswellbrook and a shared single track with passing loops from that point north and west.

Arup’s rail engineering team in the United Kingdom, supported by colleagues in Australia, have been involved in designing and delivering on a number of schemes designed to increase the capacity on this line.

This has ranged from reconfiguring the track arrangement and signalling to meet and exceed the client’s requirement for 17 trains to pass through this area each day and to improve the operational flexibility.

At Maitland to Minimbah our study, after discussion with key stakeholders, was to quantify the maximum capacity for tonnage and train paths and to deliver signalling and operational modelling for the third track.

In the range of individual projects, we have had to deal with a range of highly complex track layout options to meet the needs of the client. Our skilled use of timetable and infrastructure management and running time calculation programs (RailSys and Dynamis) has enabled us to shorten the delivery time.
