Masterplan for Sabiha Gökçen International Airport

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SGIA) is the second airport in Istanbul and is a key piece of infrastructure in developing the business and tourism market within the city of Istanbul and wider Türkiye.

Traffic has grown substantially at the airport from 47,000 passengers per annum in 2001 to close to 7 million for 2009 and according to the estimations, in 2028 the annual number of passengers is expected to be 29 million and the annual motion of the aircraft will be 282.000.

The Advanced Technology Industrial Park and Airport Project (ITEP) is a development project that involves linking the commercialisation of technology with effective public and private investments. It aims to create a dynamic, scientific, technological and more importantly an indigenous infrastructure for economic growth, technological development and global competitiveness.

2028 Masterplan

Arup was engaged by Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) to develop a masterplan for ITEP. The 2028 Masterplan for Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SGIA) comprises the analysis of the existing aviation related facilities and the identification of future facility and land use requirements. The study also includes land uses and designs for the technopark, the social and commercial zones that are located in the North East of the existing terminals.

The 2028 Masterplan is based fundamentally on the set of forecasts provided by Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Consortium (ISG), the terminal and apron operator.

Second runway

Also key to the masterplan is the development of a second runway. The proposed location and length are set by General Directorate of State Airports Authority (SHGM). The location, 1,100m south and parallel to the existing runway enables independent operations from both runways. The length of 3,500m supports operations of large aircrafts such as a B747, B777 and A380.
