Irish World Academy of Music and Dance

  • Part of the University of Limerick´s campus for performing arts.
  • 4,850m² space where musicians, dancers, composers, singers, conductors and choreographers explore together.

The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance provides a space for musicians, dancers, composers, singers, conductors and choreographers to explore together. At the academy, musicologists and choreologists research alongside live performance.

As part of the campus at the University of Limerick the building consists of 4,850m² of floor area and includes performance theatres, dance studios, practice rooms, music studios, office space and meeting rooms. Arup provided civil and structural engineering consultancy services on this project.

In March 2004 the University of Limerick launched a two stage international design competition through the RIAI for the design of the Irish World of Performing Arts Village.

The competition brief made repeated references to the river Shannon and its monastic past with learning associations to the current university culture. It called specifically to `provide an inspired space out of which an international community of musicians, dancers and scholars can find their own voice´ and for `an Atrium/Entrance to duplicate as an exhibition and display space for art and also as a gathering point for people attending performances´.

The academy also offers a suite of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. These programmes honour the energies of performance and academic reflection across a wide range of genres and disciplines.
