Kolubara due diligence

  • Review of documentation and comparison of scope and content against environmental and social requirements.
  • Supporting application for funds to improve the quality and consistency of mining operations.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was considering financing for an Environmental Improvement Project at Kolubara Mining Basin, Serbia.

Arup was appointed to conduct an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment. The work also included environmental and social due diligence – reviewing documentation and assessing the environmental and social issues associated with proposed project.

Reviewing the proposals against compliance with the EBRD Performance Requirements was also a key part of the work. Results were presented as a GAP Analysis Report.

This proposed investment of EBRD funds is for the improvement of open cast mine operation technology and introduction of the coal quality management system. This should provide an energy resource of uniform quality for more efficient power plant operation.

Arup also produced a stakeholder engagement plan and non-technical summary for the project.
