Mountain rivers

  • Sustainable maintenance good-practice manual for mountain rivers.
  • Restoring equilibrium to the condition of mountain watercourses.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts, Arup was involved in preparation of rules for sustainable maintenance of gravel-bed streams and rivers in southern Poland.

The changes in the Carpathian's rivers resulted in a number of threats to the water management and the ecological condition of the aquatic ecosystems. Existing methods of river maintenance proved unsustainable, economically ineffective or not viable. In addition, these needed to be reviewed in line with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive.

Improving river maintenance

To take away the social anxiety and bring sustainable solutions for river maintenance, Arup developed, together with the collaborators, a guidebook that adresses all sorts of issues on the subject.

Tomasz Podgajniak, Secretary of State for the Polish Ministry of Environment, says:

"'Sustainable Maintenance Good-practice Manual for Mountain Streams and Rivers' is a handbook which presents a new approach to nature conservation matters and indicates possibilities of retaining its good condition, despite performing construction works in the river channels."

Identification, assessment and restoring

This includes identification of threats and impacts on the environment, as well as the development of methods of assessment and restoring disturbed equilibrium conditions in mountain watercourses.

Furthermore, we have studied the rivers continuity and free channel migration within the 'river corridor'. We also defined criteria for existing structures evaluation and an approach to construction works.
