- Expansion of world-famous film studios to create 500 jobs in the creative industries.
- Integrating housing and workplaces into living streetscapes used as film sets.
- Setting a new standard for zero-carbon initiatives in the film industry.
The world-famous studios, home of the James Bond and Harry Potter movies, have sought planning permission for a 46ha expansion adjacent to the existing Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, UK.
Led by Arup's masterplanning and urban design team, the application was prepared by an integrated team including sustainability, infrastructure, transportation, environmental, landscape, logistics, energy, information and communications technology and waste engineers.
Creative cluster
The expansion proposals aim to form a 'creative cluster' of people and businesses associated with the screen industries and the related areas of commerce, education and culture.
Pinewood is also working with the National Film and Television School to set up an on-site academy. The project will comprise up to 1,400 residential units, up to 8,000m2 for the creative industries, and is predicted to generate more than 500 jobs for the wider creative industries in the area.
The new housing and work places will be integrated into living streetscapes used as film sets, including a Parisian square, a Venice canal and New York lofts. The primary aim of these film sets is to minimise the need to travel to remote locations, and reduce the associated carbon emissions.
Sustainability standards
The project will recognise new standards for green and 'zero carbon' initiatives in the film and media industries, and adopt stringent measures for overall sustainability of the site and surrounding area. It is one of the first projects to be in line with the Mayor of London's Green Screen London Action Plan – an initiative to reduce carbon emissions from the film industry.
